Tomorrow, Gorman Park Volunteers Work Day, June 18 10am to 2pm

Good evening,

I hope you can make it by Gorman Park tomorrow for some exciting weeding and ground-cover planting. We will be trimming back the weedy area near the first hairpin turn, coming up from Broadway. Two weeks ago we planted the remainder of the summer bulbs that we got at It's My Park Day, and two weeks before that we planted the flowers on the left side of the path coming up from Broadway.

So lots of changes, lots of things going on. Hope you can join us tomorrow! Inside the park, East side of Broadway and 190th St, 10 am to 2pm.

Gorman Park Volunteers Work Day, Saturday June 4th 10am to 2pm

Good evening!

Hope your short week is going well and you are enjoying the beautiful weather today (Thursday).

The next Gorman Park work day will be this Saturday, June 4, 2011, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Hope you can join us. It's no longer It's My Park Day, but we still have some bulbs left over to plant in the sunny area just south of the shortcut path up the steep hill.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

It's My Park Day at Gorman Park tomorrow, Sunday 5/22!

Good morning!

It's a beautiful day today and I'm hoping for a beautiful day tomorrow as well for IT'S MY PARK DAY in Gorman Park (West 190th-West 189th, Broadway to Wadsworth Terrace). We are getting plants from Parks Department, so there will be planting tomorrow as well as weeding and trimming and mulching and general cleanup. See you starting at 10:00 am and until about 2 or 3 pm. Wear long pants and long sleeves, and consider sunscreen.

If you have any questions email to gormanpark (at) gmail (dot) com,

Monday's woody prunings, enroute to compost heap with cargo bike

More cargo bike pictures, this time encumbered with woody prunings
from Sunday's work day. Sorry about the poor picture quality; the
garbageman took the picture for me using my cell phone (camera battery
died).

I was actually a little disappointed, because I had taken six bags of
mulch from Broadway around to the top of the park, but the Parks
garbagemen had removed those to their truck while I was dropping off
the woody prunings, here.

Note in the final picture how unbalanced the load became; it was a
little squirrely steering while loaded probably for that reason, but I
managed fine, taking up about an entire lane of traffic the whole way.

Successful Work Day recap

Yesterday we had great weather for gardening and Yvette, Sevrin,
Dorothy, Marte and Jonathan really accomplished a huge amount. We
worked on the park section facing Broadway, to the left of the path as
you go up the hill. Sevrin and Yvette did a huge amount of weeding and
collecting mulch, and we were able to uncover several hostas plants
that had been buried under leaves. Can't wait for them to bloom! Added
to our ever-growing collection of stuff we found in the garden was a
cellphone. If you left your phone in Gorman Park, leave a comment here
and we can get it back to you.

Sorry, no pictures; too busy working to take pictures!

All the old leaves that Y and S pulled out of the soil, Jonathan put
in the wheelbarrow and rolled them up the hill to mulch the area on
the north margin of the park, where there's a lot of water runoff.
He's hopeful that the extra ground cover will allow the soil to
recover a little bit over there.

And thanks to all the neighbors who stopped by to say hello! We look
forward to seeing you on our next full-scale Work Day, Sunday May 22,
2011, 10 am to 2 pm.

An exciting look at the history and built environment of Inwood, our neighbor-neighborhood to the north. Thanks, Pat, from Volunteers for Isham Park, for sharing!

Another cargo-bike haul to the compost heap

In the "Whatever works" department, here are snaps of today's trip to
the compost pile with yesterday's woody debris. I did this last week, also.
